Celery Top Pine

(Phyllocladus asplenifolius .)

A medium sized softwood that grows in the wet areas of Tasmania.  Heartwood is a pale yellow brown and the sapwood is narrow and difficult to distinguish.  This is a fine grained hard “softwood”.

Celery works well though can spring a bit when re-sawn.  Being fairly hard and fine grained the finish off the machine is excellent though take care in areas of grain direction change

Was once widely used for many applications but is now mainly used in boat building and fine wood craft.

Getting hard to get.

 Janka 4.5 650Kg/m3 Fairly hard.

Class 2 quite durable.
