Iroko 

Chlorofora excelsa

Description

A large hardwood from Africa.  Colour often starts a pale yellow but the timber oxidises to a deep brown very quickly.  Looks like Teak.

Workability

Works well but can spring when sawn down.  The dust is quite an irritant and care must be taken.  Polishes and oils well.

Applications

Furniture, carving, boatbuilding and joinery

Availability

Readily Available.

Hardness

Janka 5.6  660kg/m3.

Durability

Durable.

Turning:   Good
Machining:   Good but mineral deposits can blunt blades.
Bending:   Average
Sanding:   Good but watch the dust.
Nailing/Screwing:   Good
Glueing:   Difficult.  Use a high solid PVA or polyurethane.
Timber Coating:   Accepts most OK.
Oil:   Oils well
Note 1   Check out the seafood restaurant in the Star City Casino in Sydney.  Ten cubic metres went into the fit out.
