Kauri

Kauri

(Agathis dammara)

Description

This large softwood grows through south east Asia. The heartwood is a pale yellow brown colour and the sapwood can be quite white. The grain is usually very straight.

Workability

This timber works extremely easily.

Applications

Mostly furniture, in particular reproduction pieces and repairs. It is pretty soft so has limited applications for hard wearing surfaces. We carry Kauri in flooring but this is mostly to service the renovation market where it is needed to match old Queensland Kauri.

Availability

Readily available up to 320mm wide. We also keep lengths up to 5.5m long on occasions. This timber has replaced the Kauri from Queensland which was once readily available.

Hardness

Janka 2.7 Density 550kg / m3   Pretty soft.

Durability

Not suited to outdoor use.
