Qld Silky Oak

(Cardwellia sublimis.)

A large hardwood from Nth Queensland. Heartwood is a pink brown. Strong rays are exposed on quarter sawn boards.

Works well by machine or hand tools. Because of the course grain it never seems to feel silky smooth after sanding. Generally very stable.

All types of furniture and veneer work.

Generally readily available.

830kg/m3  It doesn’t seem this heavy when you work it.

Not suitable for outdoor use.

At a Glance
Turning:   Very good
Machining:   Very good
Bending:   Not brilliant
Sanding:   Good, but dust can be irritating.
Nailing/Screwing:   Good
Glueing:   Excellent
Timber Coating:   Takes most coatings well.
Oil:   Will drink oil but finishes well.
Note 1   The big rays can ruin the aesthetics of a piece if care isn't taken.
Note 2   A good all round timber for wood craft with a long history in Australia.
